"Three years condensed course of MBBS after BDS to practice general medicine" Dr Mazumdar

Nagpur: Dental Council of India (DCI) of India has been trying to stem the mushrooming of dental colleges in the country. Council is ensuring new dental colleges come up only in association with an existing government medical college.

Dr Dibyendu Mazumdar, DCI president told the council was trying its best to prevent new colleges in private sector. "What is the use of more colleges without any quality education and employment? Hence DCI has brought out a regulation of allowing a student to go for a three years' condensed course of MBBS after BDS. This will qualify them to also practice general medicine," he said.

Dr Mazumdar was in city for the three-day national conference of periodontology (implantology) organized by the Indian Society of Periodontology (ISP).

The council wrote to all state governments in 2011 and was repeating the appeal to post one dental surgeon at every primary health centre (PHC). "48% population in country is affected by oral cancer. Hence DCI is shifting its focus to rural areas to create awareness about oral hygiene and avoiding tobacco consumption. DCI is also stressing on infection control," said Dr Mazumdar.

The DCI chief stated that the Central government had refused to decrease the percentile in NEET examination score to accommodate more students in dental colleges. "I see nothing wrong in it. We should encourage quality education to those who deserve it," said Dr Mazumdar.

DCI introduced forensic medicine as a subject in BDS degree course and has empowered the BDS doctor to issue a death certificate in cases where cause of death is related to mouth or oral injuries.
ISP president Dr Praveen Kudwa, Maharashtra Dental Council president Dr Subhash Bhoyar, ISP president-elect Dr A R Pradip, ISP secretary Dr Balaji Manohar, organizing chairman of the conference Dr Abhay Kolte, conference secretary Dr Ramesh Kohad, organizing secretary of conference Dr Tushar Shrirao, chairman scientific committee of conference Dr Ramreddy Yeltiwar were also present in the inauguration of the conference.
